The Art of Reintroducing Yourself Series: Letting Go of the Past to Welcome Your Future

Life is an ever-evolving journey, and as we navigate through its twists and turns, we inevitably undergo transformations. One of the most profound and challenging transformations is letting go of the person we once were to make room for the person we are becoming. 2023 saw trends on instagram of people reintroducing themselves using the audio of "Public Service Announcement" by Jay-z it was incredible to see but sometimes when we reintroduce ourselves it doesn't have to be a physical glow up, that was my experience, it got to a point where I don't even recognize who I was, I had done so much inner work, I ended up changing my name, it felt uncomfortable calling me Colleen because that wasn't me anymore, that was a completely different person.

The Nature of Change:

Change is a fundamental aspect of life. From the cellular level to our personal experiences, change is constant. However, as humans, we often resist change, clinging to the familiar and comfortable. It's crucial to recognize that change is not a threat but an opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

The Attachment to the Past:

Letting go of the person you once were requires acknowledging and releasing attachments to the past. This might include old habits, relationships, or self-limiting beliefs that no longer serve your growth. Understand that these attachments, while once integral to your identity, do not define who you are becoming.

The Power of Acceptance:

Acceptance is a powerful tool on the journey of self-discovery. Embrace your past, acknowledging the experiences that shaped you. Recognize that the person you were has played a crucial role in your development, but don't let it hinder your evolution. Acceptance allows you to move forward with a lighter heart and a clearer mind.

Cultivating Self-Compassion:

Letting go of the past involves forgiving yourself for any perceived shortcomings or mistakes. Self-compassion is the key to understanding that growth is a messy, imperfect process. Be kind to yourself as you navigate the challenges of change and self-discovery.

Setting Intentions for the Future:

To welcome the person you are becoming, it's essential to set intentions for your future self. What qualities, values, and experiences do you want to cultivate? Create a vision for the person you aspire to be and align your actions with that vision.

Embracing Uncomfortable Growth:

Personal growth often involves stepping outside of your comfort zone. Embrace the discomfort that comes with change, as it signifies progress. Whether it's pursuing a new career, ending a toxic relationship, or adopting healthier habits, stepping into the unknown is where true transformation occurs.

Surrounding Yourself with Positivity:

Surround yourself with people who uplift and support your journey. Cultivate a positive environment that encourages growth and reinforces the person you are becoming. Connect with like-minded individuals who inspire you to reach your full potential.

At the beginning of this I mentioned I changed my name so let me reintroduce myself, Hello, I'm Annalise, which is a family name also was my middle name and in a sense is very much represents the person I am becoming and aspire to be .I personally had a lot of negative association with my prior name it felt like an out of body experience even being called "Colleen" at times would make me sick to my stomach . The Colleen side of me always saw herself as a burden and struggled a lot, when I picked the name Annalise out, I looked up what the hebrew meaning was- it meant Blessing. I thank "Colleen" for the development and journey she took to get me here but in order to embrace my future I had to grieve the person I once was and let her go to make way for the person I am becoming. I needed the "Colleen" in order to become "Annalise."

During this process I kept thinking of the work that goes into coding a program, just like our process with personal development it's like a constant coding in a program to create, well you, without constant updates the program will seize to malfunction very much like personal development, we need to be constantly updating, recoding ourselves but acknowledge the past versions of us as they created the foundation as to which we know as ourselves and the person we are becoming.

Letting go of the person you once were is a courageous act that opens the door to endless possibilities. Embrace change, release attachments to the past, and set forth on a journey of self-discovery. Remember that the person you are becoming is a reflection of your resilience, strength, and commitment to personal growth. As you navigate the path ahead, celebrate the transformation unfolding within you and welcome the bright future
